DHS Students Head to Springfield

Save the Armory

Top story image

Students from Delavan High School headed to Springfield on Friday to deliver some materials to Governor Rauner. These high school students won a contest to see who would go on the trip to deliever letters and other items that the entire school district created for Governor Bruce Rauner. This trip was a result of news that Governor and the Illinois Natioal Guard were contemplating closing the armory. “It’s a safe haven for us,” says Sarah Carl, a Freshman.  “When there’s a crisis at school, we can go there, and it’s safe.  If anything bad happens, it’s just a place where anyone can go to feel safe and have shelter.” Carl says the armory building is also a historical landmark for the town.

It was a lesson about government, and the economy.  It’s political because they want the Governor involved, and teacher Alison Knapik says it’s also something important to the economy. “The armory employs 10 full time employees, and 40 part-time employees.  In a town of only 1,800 people, that’s a significant portion of our population that we don’t want to see go,” says Knapik.  “Not only do those people — some of them — live in Delavan, but they also, when they come to Delavan…buy goods in Delavan, they get gas in Delavan, they send their kids to Delavan.  We don’t want to lose that from our town.” Governor Bruce Rauner wasn’t in, but Carl says Rauner’s secretary told the students he’d do everything he could to help.

We are so incredibly proud of these DHS students and their efforts to become engaged and to influence decisions at the State level. GO PANTHERS!!

Next Generation Science Standards Come to DHS!

Science Classrooms will begin to feel a little different this year for students. Mrs. Wonders will begin integrating three-dimensional learning into her science classrooms, in which she will support students in using science and engineering practices to develop, apply, and refine disciplinary and crosscutting ideas. Three dimensional learning rests on a view of science as both a body of knowledge and an evidence-based, model and theory building enterprise that continually extends, refines, and revises knowledge. . . . read more
