Mrs. VanOrder Traces the Civil War Path
Jody Van Order will be making an educational trip this summer
from July 13, 2009 through July 20, 2009. The trip will begin in
Memphis and continue on to New Orleans. The trip will trace the
path of the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. The purpose of
the trip is to help provide firsthand knowledge to US history
teachers and to encourage them to relive history. The trip is being
provided through the Teaching American History Grant Program in
cooperation with Western Illinois University and the West Central
Regional Office of Education.
In order to be eligible for the trip, Mrs. Van Order had to attend
two workshops at Western Illinois University, write a comprehensive
lesson plan on the Civil Rights Movement and compete in an
application process.
In addition, the lesson plan (the integration of the University of
Mississippi) Mrs. Van Order wrote was selected to be published by
the review committee. It will be placed on a CD and sent throughout
the state of Illinois to middle and high school teachers. The CD
will consist of several lessons dealing with the Civil War and
Civil Rights. Also, the CD will consist of photos from the
educational trip and information from the public domain material
presented to the teachers as they visit each historic location.
